Power of music rings out at school concert
THE Cornerstone Institute was a hive of activity as parents and teachers came in support of the Wesley Shining Stars and Friends concert showcasing young talent at the weekend.
The crowds were entertained by the hard-working and talented pupils from Wesley (Methodist) Practising School in Salt River.
They were joined by guest acts in their fund-raising initiative.
Proceeds of the event went towards the school’s organised sports, music and culture programme.
The school also partnered with the Cape Cultural Collective (CCC) and established a school choir. The group achieved bronze at an Eisteddfod in April this year, after only six weeks of practise.
CCC chairperson Mansoor Jaffer said: “The Cape Cultural Collective is proud to partner with Wesley School as we know the power of arts and culture to bring communities together and develop young people’s self-confidence.
‘‘Wesley school shares the same values in using music and culture to bring communities together.”
Three Wesley choirs performed, the Grade Rs who won the cuteness award, and the foundation phase and the seniors choir all coached by Eugene Jephta.
Friends included the Wynberg Boys Junior School jazz band who blew everyone away, ballroom dancers from Foxtrot Dance studio, Lee Hoffman on sax as well as the Junior Rosa Choir and Senior Rosa Choir.
Wesley Practising School principal Andre Engel said: “That finale was amazing and I have to admit it brought a tear to my eye.
“The school’s music and culture programme has only been running since the beginning of the year so this is just a taste of what’s to come.”
