Tough Mudder test of strength

- Staff Writer

THE Discovery Tough Mudder is no ordinary mud run. It’ll test your stamina and grit.

The first ever Discovery Tough Mudder event in South Africa has attracted the interest of The Sunflower Fund’s ambassador, adventurer Riaan Manser, and his wife Vasti, who marry a sense of adventure with a passion for philanthropy to rally support for causes like the fund.

Tough Mudder in Africa has partnered with SA Obstacle Course Racing (SA OCR) and takes place on September 15 at the Houwteq Campus in Elgin.

The event will feature a Tougher Mudder wave for South Africa’s elite obstacle course race athletes to compete in a 16km timed challenge with more than 20 obstacles.

A prize purse of R20 000 for first place, R10 000 for second place and R5 000 for third place is available to both male and female Mudders.

In addition, four leading competitors will be selected by SA OCR from the Tougher Mudder wave to compete for Team SA at the 2018 World’s Toughest Mudder in the US, courtesy of Travelstart.

World’s Toughest Mudder takes place on November 10 and 11 in Fairburn, Georgia, US and consists of an 8km circuit, prepped with 20 to 25 of Tough Mudder’s biggest, oneof-a-kind obstacles, as well as a few of World’s Toughest-only obstacles.

The man, woman and team that completes the most 8km course laps at this massive event over a 24-hour period will be crowned champion, winning $10 000 (R142 600) each and Toughest Mudder bragging rights for an entire year.

The SA OCR partnership extends to include a custom-built obstacle on the day and an offer to SA OCR members that includes a R100 discount on a Tougher Mudder registration.

“We are delighted to partner with SA OCR to deliver the competitive pathway for Discovery Tough Mudder in South Africa,” said Andrew Douglas, co-owner of Invictus Events and Entertainment.

“We look forward to working with SA OCR, not only to help attract the highest calibre of OCR athletes to compete, but also to provide the necessary skills and expertise on race day to steward and referee the competitive race wave.”
