Take a trip on the wild side to see flowers

- Staff Writer

FLOWER fever has broken out in Clanwilliam – and visitors to this year’s Clanwilliam Wildflower Show are promised an extraordinary experience of the most beautiful landscapes and colourful flower exhibitions.

The annual show opened last Thursday and closes on Sunday, with entry costing R50.

More than 350 different plant species are being exhibited in The Flora Church of Clanwilliam.

As the host venue of the exhibition, the church, has been transformed in keeping with the unique show taking place.

A volunteer, who helped behind the scenes to help build this year’s Clanwilliam Wildflower Show, said: “The work done in the church is breathtaking.

“We simply cannot wait to show the public the abundance of wildflowers.”

Volunteers, who were given special permits that allowed them to pick the plants and flowers, did the preparatory work of arranging flowers, such as beautiful purple violets, in recycled tins that form part of the exhibitions.

Daleen Schoombee, who worked in the species-room of the show, said there are lots of wildflowers this year that she had rarely seen before.

She mentioned the yellow bobbejaantjie and also the purple bokhorinkie, which is smaller than bokhorinkies of the previous years.

The reason for this phenomenon, she said, is due to the unique rainfall pattern the area has experienced over the last few years.
