- RAPHAEL WOLF

SOME of Cape Town’s most muscular bodies were paraded at the annual Fitness SA and Musclemania Bodybuilding contest in Bellville Park on Saturday.

Rondebosch resident David Kaaya, 37, emerged as overall winner at Bellville Park’s Barnyard Willowbridge.

“The overall winner of Musclemania gets to represent South Africa in Las Vegas, US, from November 14 to 16, 2018,” said the event’s owner and organiser Bernadette Beyer.

There were 20 divisions in Saturday’s contest and all the winners of those divisions qualified to go to the Las Vegas contest. There were 50 contestants. “But the show will pay (travelling expenses and competition entry fees) of only the overall winner (David Kaaya) of Musclemania.

“He also competed in the Under 65 Lightweight Division and did the Masters 35 and Over Division.

“He also went into the Overall Division for the finals and won that,” said Beyer.

She added that other divisions of Saturday’s contest included Miss Ladies Bikini, won by 26-year-old Lauren Rix from Tableview.

She said all first prize winners received trophies and that hampers worth R100 000 and other prizes were also handed out.

“Trifocus company gave all the first prize winners R3 000 vouchers to go study as personal trainers to find employment in the trade.”

Beyer and her partner Riaan Heinse, who had previously won a Mr Fitness division category, also gave an exhibition performance as a couple at the event.

“I had hosted the show before for 14 years.

“This is the second year I’m hosting the show again after a four-year break. I’m happy with the way the show went and I’m excited about the future of the show,” Beyer said.
