6 big trends we loved from NYFW

From easy-to-wear florals to show-stopping bling, the runway had something for everyone

- MPHO RANTAO

AS WE bid farewell to another successful season of New York’s Fashion Week, let’s take a look at some of the biggest shows and trends that hit the runway.

Here are six you should know about.

FLORAL PRINT

Feigning little surprise at the trend from the catwalk, floral prints made their presence known in an elegant fashion, displaying various looks from floral accessories to floral print dresses. Brands like Badgley Mischka and Rodarte each displayed gorgeous floral-print items that were both couture and ready-to-wear.

Most of them were neither an eyesore nor needing someone with a daring fashion sense to be able to pull them off.

RUFFLES

Designers Christian Siriano, Rodarte and David Tlale brought ruffles back into full swing with their offerings. Tlale literally stopped traffic with his show in the Big Apple, displaying soft hues and an abundance of ruffles, while Christian Siriano probably got the audience anxious for the spring season with his brightly coloured ruffled ball gowns and evening wear.

WINDBREAKERS

It’s no secret that some of the biggest fashion trends from the ’90s are making their way back on to the fashion scene, and another trend that fashionistas have to look forward to is the windbreaker/parka/ anorak jacket.

Designers Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein and Dion Lee all styled their windbreakers as the ultimate accessory for the spring and the summer season, displaying the outer jackets in latex, plastic and polyester.

MONOCHROMATIC

Another memo announced on the runway that’s worth noting: bright, saturated hues either monochromatically or colourblocked à la Tom Ford.

The bright colour palette was at the top of the agenda at some of the shows, among them Brandon Maxwell, Prabal Gurung and Chromat.

Those who followed the earthytone palette were Hugo Boss, Diane von Furstenberg and Tom Ford.

SHEER

Revealing what your parents gave you featured prominently.

Designers such as Mansur Gavriel, Jason Wu and Jeremy Scott brought their sheer game to the runway with their creations and various styles of the sheer material.

The manipulation and creation of the diaphanous dresses made with sophisticated cuts left little to the imagination.

JEWEL-ENCRUSTED

This was an interesting style to hit the runway, with the likes of Dolce & Gabbana and Rodarte leading the way with their jewel- and crystal-encrusted suits, accessories and dresses.

If you’re going to stop traffic, what better way to do it than it in a crystal-encrusted gown?
