HERITAGE CONCERT

- SIMONE HERADIEN Artscape Theatre Centre Marketing and Communications Senior Manager

IT IS indeed a moment to behold when one is able to witness musical greats collaborating on stage.

That is exactly what is on offer at Artscape from September 26 to 29 when Dizu Plaatjies, in concert with Zinzi Nogavu, bursts onto the arena stage. Plaatjies is the former leader of the South African group, Amampondo.

Since leaving Amampondo he has started a new ensemble called Ibuyambo.

He and the new group have presented numerous shows in a number of European countries, and perform regularly in South Africa.

His interest in African percussion music has taken him to numerous countries on the continent with the result that he now owns a substantial collection of handmade musical instruments from sub-Saharan Africa.

Plaatjies in concert with Nogavu displays the beauty of African music through indigenous instruments and aims to take its audiences through a journey of those indigenous instruments, along with the soulful voice of Nogavu performing alongside the internationallyacclaimed musician and Sama awardwinning Professor Plaatjies.

The UCT Alumni students will accompany them from the African Music Department at the South African Music College, where Professor Plaatjies lectures.

Marlene le Roux is extremely thrilled about this production, saying: “Excitement is mounting for this auspicious collaboration. Artscape cannot wait to host a partnership of this calibre.

“What is particularly exhilarating about this production is not just that we welcome back Plaatjies to our stages but that Nogavu will be joining him this time.

“Also the fact that they are sharing the stage with a younger generation of musicians.

“I am always encouraged when this happens as it implies that the future of our indigenous sounds is in good hands and I personally cannot wait to witness the magic they are going to make.”

With this important collaboration, social issues will be addressed through music, but above all the production aims to introduce the sensational unique sound of our traditional music. Tickets are R100 with special discounts of R50 for pensioners, scholars & students and block bookings of 10 or more.

Join Professor Plaatjies along with Nogavu bringing to you a strong powerful Heritage Concert with compliments of indigenous sounds, which aims to feed the audience with Isingqi swakwanto.

All tickets are available through Computicket or Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695.
