HIS dedication and commitment for teaching were the driving force that enabled pupils of Vuyani Primary School to achieve excellence.

This World Teachers Day, the Gugulethu community is honouring retired teacher Robert Kinkin Qengwa.

World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 1966’s ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

This year will mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) that recognises education as a key right and establishes an entitlement to free compulsory education, ensuring inclusive and equitable access for all children.

Project director of the 60th Gugulethu anniversary celebrations Phumzile Nteyi said that as their theme in the celebrations is “Reclaiming Our Pride”, they see it fitting to honour the 86-year-old Qengwa.

“Mr Qengwa is our pride as he played a crucial role in producing many outstanding leaders, professionals and academics. He has served this community as a teacher for 38 years and is the only first teacher that we are aware of still alive in Gugulethu today, who started to teach in 1958 – the same year our township came into existence. We want to celebrate him and show our appreciation for his great contribution while he is still alive.

“If we had enough funds, we would’ve done something big and also celebrate other teachers.”

Nteyi said they will have a surprise visit at his house where his former students will give speeches and will also give him gifts.

Vuyani Primary School principal Mahlubi Ngqukuvana said he is also a product of Qengwa.

“It’s a good thing celebrating his work while he’s still alive. Qengwa was loved by pupils and parents alike, he bowed out receiving many glowing tributes. I will never forget his love for teaching, his sensitivity for those who needed help,” Ngqukuvana said.
