Maties mark 100 years
AS PART of the University of Stellenbosch’s centenary celebrations, the University Museum will be presenting an exhibition: “A hundred artefacts for a hundred years”.
A request from the institution’s rector and vice-chancellor Wim de Villiers to set up an exhibition that would represent the 100 years of the University of Stellenbosch’s existence by means of 100 objects, led to the presentation of items of culturalhistorical interest in the US Museum.
The 100 artefacts do not represent each of the 100 years or tell the full story of the university’s history.
They are simply a variety of objects that represent the various faculties, administrative divisions, student residences and cultural activities.
Some items date from the period before the founding of the university, but were used later by the institution.
The oldest object is a grandfather clock dating from 1780 and the most recent is the centenary flag from 2018.
The smallest object is a signet ring from the Faculty of Military Science and the largest is the council table used for meetings of the Victoria College council and later by the university council. Other items include the model of Sunsat, the satellite built in 1999 by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The exhibition will be opened on October 31 at 6pm in the University Museum, 52 Ryneveld Street.
