Shock over killing of councillor

THE killing of ANC councillor Luyanda Mbele and his cousin, Mzwandile Mathenjwa, in Kraaifonte­in has left the political fraternity in shock.

Condolence­s poured in for grieving families, with police and mayor Patricia de Lille appealing to anyone with informatio­n about what she described as a “brutal crime” to contact the police (see letter page 5).

Police Minister Bheki Cele visited Kraaifonte­in yesterday and promised the families that his officers had formed a special unit to hunt down the killer or killers.

3 000 people homeless, with a focus on pupils affected by the tragedy as they prepare for their final exams.

A Joburg father has slammed Ashton College and labelled it “Islamophob­ic and racist” after the school allegedly told the parent that the pupil should either shave his beard or leave the school.

The Muslim family is embroiled in a fight with the school, saying it refused their Grade 8 son the right to grow his beard as part of the boy’s religious practices.

In Mitchells Plain, Spine View Primary School pupils were overjoyed after being presented with their new cricket pitch yesterday thanks to the JP21 Foundation, the initiative of Proteas all-rounder JP Duminy.

Lastly, the the iPotsoyi Spring Festival will be discontinu­ed after the killing of a music festival-goer at the weekend.
