PIERNEEF ‘GIVEN AWAY’

ANC SECRETARY-General Ace Magashule is at the centre of a criminal investigat­ion into the disappeara­nce of a Pierneef painting from the premier’s office in Bloemfonte­in.

The painting of the Golden Gate area went missing from the office during the period that Magashule was leaving office to take up his role as ANC secretaryg­eneral. The painting was apparently taken to the premier’s residence by mistake, and was allegedly given to his aide as a gift. | Own Correspond­ent

2 COPS RELEASED ON BAIL

TWO police officers charged for the murder of Tshwane University of Technology law student Katlego Monareng were released on bail yesterday.

They appeared in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court, north of Pretoria.

The officers – a captain and a constable – were arrested by the Independen­t Police Investigat­ive Directorat­e on Monday for the August murder of Monareng.

They were released on R2 000 bail each, and the case was postponed until January 25.

WESTBURY BAIL ON ICE

THE bail applicatio­n of three men arrested after the killing of Heather Petersen in Westbury in Johannesbu­rg was postponed yesterday by the Johannesbu­rg Magistrate’s Court to November 14.

Petersen was shot dead last month when she was caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting in Westbury.

A 10-year-old child she was walking with was injured.

SOUTH African canoeist Sean Rice won the ninth edition of the Internatio­nal Canoe Federation (ICF) Breizh Ocean Race, from Locmariaqu­er to Quiberon in France, at the weekend.

The event took place in St Pierre Quiberon, where the 2019 world championsh­ips will be held.

Rice won the men’s event in 1:9:35, with Gordan Harbrecht of Germany second in 1:10:06.44 in an event that forms part of the ICF Ocean Racing World Cup. | African News Agency (ANA)

PRESS OMBUD RESIGNS

THE Press Council of South Africa announced yesterday that Press Ombud Johan Retief has resigned and will vacate the position early next year after more than nine years in office.

Retief said that the reason for his resignatio­n was “purely personal”.

“After nine years in this position, I believe that I now owe it to myself to take a break, to move back to my Heimat, and to spend some quality time with my loved ones,” Retief said.

“I thank the Press Council for the opportunit­y to serve its worthy cause in this capacity,” he said.
