Disabled kids play in golf event
YOUNG disabled golfers showcased their talent at the SA Disabled Golf Association’s (Sadga) First Swing interschools golf tournament in the Western Cape.
The tournament, now in its third year, took place at the David Mowbray Golf Club at the weekend and allowed the young participants to get the feel of a real tournament. Children from special needs schools across Cape Town took part.
The First Swing Programme exposes children with disabilities to the game of golf, with the primary focus on rehabilitation and psychological development of disabled children.
“After their warm-ups, the First Swing programme’s patron, Oom Kulk, started the shotgun start with the old King David Bell on the five-hole modified golf environment, which was set up on the practice facilities consisting of putting, chipping, throwing and driving the ball to the Snag Man. The winning school was Astra School,” said organisers.
The event was sponsored by Canon SA and the spokesperson for the group, Dana Eitzen, said: “A heartfelt congratulations to all the young golfers who participated in the First Swing Programme Western Province interschools tournament. Their enthusiasm for their sport and for life is inspiring.”
She said that Canon has been closely involved with Sadga since 2001.
“Since then, the company’s involvement has continued to grow and blossom, with its support focusing specifically on the First Swing initiative.”
