THE RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation Day Race will bring runners, novice and experts alike, to experience the vibrant atmosphere the township has to offer.

Participants will take part in either the 10km run or 4.2km fun run on December 16.

RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club and race director chairperson Aubrey Shoko said they were working hard to make the day a success.

“This is our 19th year and it is unique as runners from all over come to run and experience Gugulethu. The race was started as a way to promote the coming together of various communities. This year we are expecting close to 2 000 people to participate.

“We hope the race will raise awareness on how people in townships live. People can see where they can come and assist in bettering the lives of people in Gugulethu. That’s why it’s held on an important day in the calendar, Reconciliation Day.”

RCS has sponsored the club for the past 18 years.

“They have helped us assist people around Gugs through sport and they help us organise the race. Through the club we promote channelling people’s energies in a positive and rewarding way. A place where people become part of a family and improve their health. We are appreciative that the company is helping us.”

The race has also partnered with community organisation Bambanani as well as two local churches.

Proceeds from the race will go to Bambanani, Shoko said.

He welcomed everyone to join in the fun.

“This race is for anyone, your fitness levels don’t matter. There will also be some top runners racing for top prizes. People like me just want to go and enjoy the atmosphere along the route, which will be filled with a lot of entertainment including a marimba group.”

He added that the day is open to the whole family, with entertainment, live performances and DJs as well as food stalls on the field.

The race starts at NY49 Gugulethu stadium. Registration will kick off at 5am, while the race will start at 6.30am.
