ENOCH SKOSANA’S voice goes up with excitement as he rattles off the names of runners he has groomed.

“Welcome Lubisi is a junior and he was number two at the 21km national championships. Thabang Maleka is one of the best juniors and Samuel Segoaba has represented the country and has also won the JP Morgan Chase.”

The former SA 10 000m and cross country champion has made it his business to give back to the country, and other than training young aspiring athletes, he also hosts an annual race that has 10km and 5km runs, as well as a 1.6km kiddies race.

The event, in its sixth year, takes place in the city tomorrow from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison.

“I have about 25 children under my tutelage and this event helps us to get the kids some running shoes and all the necessary stuff they need to help with their running,” Skosana explains.

Such has been the growth of the event that Skosana says there will be about 1500 participants in all the events.

“Shadrack Hoff (pictured) and Linda Hlophe are coming to run this weekend and having them there will definitely inspire the youngsters. We will also have the area commissioner of prison services and because I work there we are doing our best to encourage the employees to keep a healthy lifestyle.

“We also have Assupol as one of the sponsors and the Nedbank Club supports us too.”

Registration is R100 for 10km, and R50 for the 5km and kiddies runs. The main race starts at 6.30am.
