WHAT’S ON SA OPEN

- Jacques van der Westhuyzen

WHAT they said after round one Ernie Els after a 5-under-par 66:

“I’m very pleased, it was a tough morning, and windy for Joburg. I made some putts on the front nine, and hung in on the back nine. It wasn’t so easy on that course (Bush willow), but Firethorn will be tougher, it’s a larger course, and you’re going to have to hit longer irons in. But, I like it better, it’s not as tricky.”

Matt Wallace after a 6-under-par 65:

“The first five holes (where he made four birdies), to come out of the blocks like that, after a few weeks off, was nice. I’ll take the positives from today and go again tomorrow.”

Branden Grace after a 5-under-par 66:

“I played well, I played solid golf. I’m disappointed I didn’t make birdie on two of the par-fives on that course (Bush willow), especially the first. The wind was blowing and that made it tough, but a sterner test will come on Firethorn. It’s my first time here so I don’t know how it’s going to play, but I’m happy with the way I started and am excited for the second round. I’ll give myself a seven out of 10, which means there’s room for improvement.”

Madalitso Muthiya after an 8-underpar 63:

“It’s not something I expected, but I went out and executed the best I could. I hit good iron shots and made the putts I needed to. I guess the score reflects the way I played; it’s something to go forward with.” |
