Presidency committed to a resolution
THE PRESIDENCY says the government still remains committed to addressing the plight of Khoi and San communities. This comes as representatives of the communities continue to camp outside the Union Buildings.
The group is calling for, among other things, the scrapping of the Land Claims Act and they want the word “coloured” removed from all government documentation.
According to the Presidency, the group is also opposed to the land reform process, based on the belief that the Khoi and San communities are the owners of South Africa’s land and that black and white people have no claim to land ownership.
It said the community sought to pursue this, despite being advised to use appropriate forums, which include public consultation processes that can be facilitated by Parliament.
The group, led by Chief Khoisan SA, has further threatened to divorce the country’s laws and, from January 1, function under an independent state.
Further, in a statement posted on the website yesterday, the Presidency said that government had informed the group that, at the moment, it works closely with the National Khoisan Council and that a meeting was held last month in Bloemfontein to discuss matters of concern to the communities.
“Mr Khoisan SA is encouraged to interact with the council so that he can contribute to its repositioning from within. This will make it easier for government to interface with Khoisan leaders through a single, unified and legitimate structure,” the statement read.
