AU to kick off events in build-up to session sitting

- | Staff Reporter

THE AFRICAN Union (AU) will later this month begin with side events as a build-up to the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 10-11.

The theme of this year’s Summit is titled: “The year of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons: Towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa.”

The Heads of State and governments who form part of the AU will gather to discuss important issues pertaining to the continent. This year African nations, including Nigeria and South Africa, will be holding their general elections.

Despite the numerous elections, experts have warned that many countries are still marred by extreme violence while some believe there is little prospect of change.

The AU has been vocal in calling for unity and growth of African economies many leaders have committed to achieving as part of the goals set down in Agenda 2063.

Last year saw South Africa joining several countries in signing the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement with the AU.

Many leaders have also committed to following through with the agreement by ensuring there is free-trade movement on the continent.

Chairman of the AU Moussa Faki Mahamat has highlighted that February also marks the centenary of the Pan-African Congress, which took place in Paris and laid the foundation for the creation of the Organisation of African Unity.

“May this centenary further raise awareness and strengthen the will for a stronger mobilisation in a way commensurate with today’s exigencies,” he said.
