ON THE EVE of Wednesday’s third T20 International against Pakistan at Supersport Park, Centurion, South Africa’s new fast bowler Lutho Sipamla disclosed what it meant to make his debut for his country.

Sipamla, 20, donned his first cap for the team in the second T20 against Pakistan in Joburg on Sunday, returning the most economical figures on the night for his team with a miserly 0/23 in his four overs.

South Africa won by seven runs, and claimed the series. It lost the third T20 by 27 runs on Wednesday.

“Walking on to the pitch to a full house (at the Wanderers) and knowing that I am realising a childhood dream was an impeccable moment,” Sipamla said. “Words cannot describe how I felt at that moment. I guess anyone will be nervous on the day of making a debut for the Proteas. It was about controlling the emotions.”

The Port Elizabeth-born Sipamla played a vital role for his side, helping rein in Pakistan after they had raced to 70/1 in the first six overs, demonstrating the key attribute of being able to bowl to his skipper’s plan.

“Our captain David Miller helped me during the game and he also allowed me to bowl the way I wanted to bowl,” said Sipamla.

The only disappointment for Sipamla was that he went wicketless that night, but he got one in the last T20. His efforts were crucial as his side went on to secure a series-sealing seven-run win.

They were also a continuation of his good form in the Mzansi Super League, where Sipamla first caught the eye of the selectors, finishing third on the wicket-takers charts.

It was during the competition that Proteas legend AB De Villiers predicted a bright future for the powerful young fast bowler. Both were representing the Tshwane Spartans when De Villiers made the claim.

“I think he has all the credentials to become a serious fast bowler for South Africa in the future,” De Villiers said.

Sipamla said: “I gained a lot of experience playing with AB. Sharing the dressing room, training and playing with him was life-changing for me because he kept me calm. His presence calms you because he speaks to you and gives you plans.”

He claimed his first wicket on the international scene with figures of 1/25 in the final T20, which Pakistan won by 27 runs.

The impressive youngster may just be beginning a lengthy career in national colours.
