THE Artscape Theatre Centre’s piazza (marketplace) will be abuzz with activity when the Nightscape “openhearted public festival of design, creativity and performance” takes place later this month.

Hosted by the Design Indaba Festival 2019, the event takes place from February 27 to March 1.

Design Indaba Festival manager Bev Cupido said the Nightscape will run concurrently with the annual Design Indaba Conference and Cape Town Simulcast, with entry being free in a “container village” made of used shipping containers. Nightscape begins at 5pm. “We want this public dimension of the Design Indaba to be accessible to the people of Cape Town.

“We have thrown open our arms to the city,” said Cupido.

She welcomed all to enjoy the line-up of design exhibitions, film, installations, master classes, displays, curated retail and live music.

She said Nightscape would showcase a collection of Africaninspired homeware commissioned by global powerhouse Ikea.

Other free exhibitions on the piazza include a curated display of all 10 of the objects nominated for the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa 2019.

The public is encouraged to vote online for their favourite and the award will go to the nominee with the highest number of public votes.

Other displays include the Design Indaba Capsule Collection of hypercurated limited-edition products spanning fashion, furniture and homeware.

An array of independent local designers will also be retailing their product ranges, while the annual Emerging Creatives exhibition, supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, will take pride of place in the epicentre of the village.

A class of 50 young design stars from across the country will showcase their work within the container spaces.

More highlights include conference speaker Wanuri Kahiu presenting her controversial film Rafiki in person, and director Boris Bertram’s documentary The Human Shelter, in collaboration with Ikea, being on the bill.
