MARITZBURG United coach, Eric Tinkler, is set to make a decision about Thamsanqa Sangweni in the next few weeks.

Sangweni is trying his luck with the Team of Choice, after he was recently deemed surplus to requirements at Chippa United.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder started training with Maritzburg last week.

He worked with Tinkler during his time with Chippa at the start of this season.

Speaking to the media, Tinkler expressed his fondness for Sangweni.

“We know what Thami’s ability is. Everybody knows the talent that he has. He has got a little bit of a dark past. Hopefully, we can remedy that,” Tinkler said.

Maritzburg are still rooted at the bottom of the table with 14 points after 20 games. They earned their first victory under the tenure of Tinkler on Friday when they dispatched Polokwane City 3-1.

Tinkler has made only one signing – Miguel Timm – since taking over the reins.

Sangweni burst on to the scene back in 2009 in the colours of AmaZulu. He joined Sundowns in 2012, and also had a loan stint with Ajax Cape Town, before a brief stint at Orlando Pirates.

“I’m a big fan of Thami but he needs to prove himself.

“He will train with us for a couple of days and then the decision will be made, “Tinkler explained.

Sangweni made 13 appearances for the Chilli Boys this season.

Maritzburg’s next assignment is in two weeks time against Cape Town City away from home in the league. Maritzburg will be looking to build on their victory against Polokwane City when they travel to City later this month.
