Brides say ‘I do’ to new trends

CONGRATULATIONS, you’re engaged and can’t wait to spend the rest of your life together. But suddenly, after all the euphoria, the reality of the not-too-small task ahead dawns on you – you now have the wedding of your dreams to plan; and where do you start?

And added to planning the biggest event of your life, each year new trends emerge with bigger and better ways to “wedding”, leaving brides and grooms-to-be overwhelmed. As part of the Brabys Future Bride Bridal & Beauty Show which took place in Suncoast in Durban, bridal and beauty influencers shared their trends.

Show manager Justine Snyman said there had been notable changes in wedding trends, particularly in the themes gaining popularity. “In the past, themes predominantly took shape in specific colours for décor, bridesmaids dresses and stationary. Modern weddings take this a step further by choosing an overarching theme that is evident in every aspect of the wedding – from glitz and glamour to night-time weddings. A popular theme at the moment are ‘green’ weddings, starting with eco-friendly invitations and registry stationary, edible favours and donations of flowers and leftovers to a good cause.” The dress takes a bold step away from the traditional as brides showcase their personality through their style; said Hanrie Lues-du Preez, who had been monitoring the requests she receives for dresses and had also noticed a change from the traditional.

“Many brides have requested sleeves this year, as opposed to previous seasons. The mermaid silhouette is still a firm favourite, but more brides are requesting whimsical tulle gowns this year as well. Different colour linings are also gaining popularity, while less beading is a definite trend as well. Brides are definitely more open to different shades and nudes and pinks will return for future looks.”

Bridal make-up, while still natural, will see darker, bolder elements enter for a romantic and striking look. Alana-Jane Halgreen, a make-up artist from Kiss & Make-Up, said universal touches were becoming more popular.

“Make-up trends that exist in fashion are now making their way into wedding make-up scene. Bold lips in plums and reds, consistent monochromatic rosy hues, thick and full eyebrows, winged eyeliner, a luminous touch to the skin, metallic eyelids and navy accents all add to the drama of the big day. Natural still reigns supreme as brides showcase their freckles and imperfections, instead of hiding them,” says Halgreen.

Embracing the natural also extended to hairstyles, with brides opting for refined everyday looks with add texture to complete the perfect look.

“Effortless, carefree hairstyles that require minimal maintenance are both practical and beautiful. Natural waves and undone boho braids are very trendy brides who prefer their hair down, while messy relaxed buns and pony tails are the style choice for those wanting their hair up.”
