THE UWC has turned down an application for an event linked to embattled Kwaito star Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo after his girlfriend and gqom singer Bongekile “Babes Wodumo” Simelane lodged an assault complaint against him.

“After much consultation and deliberation with key stakeholders, the management of UWC has taken the decision to decline the application for an event that was earmarked for May 4, 2019.

“The event application by West Ink Production to use the university’s sports stadium was under consideration by the relevant structures on campus.

“However, developments at the weekend have put the application in a different light.

“A charge of assault has been laid against Mampintsha.

“While the university respects due process and the rule of law, it cannot in good conscience allow an event to take place on its campus involving an individual who has been implicated in an incident of gender-based violence,” the institution said yesterday.

Maphumulo appeared in the dock of the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of assault this week and claimed he had attacked Simelane in self-defence.

He was granted bail of R2 000 and told not to communicate with Simelane for the duration of the case.

Maphumulo, 41, handed himself over at Westville police station after a video of the incident showing him viciously attacking Simelani, 25, went viral on Monday.

Maphumo yesterday opened a case against Simelane accusing her of assault.

Maphumulo told the media on Tuesday Simelane physically abused him whenever she was drunk.

“She is very bossy. She also attacked me that day.

“Even when I am injured, once she drinks, she hits me with anything in the house. I am not an abuser.

“I have bruises all over my body, even in my fingers. I was abused as well,” said Maphumulo.

Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, spokesperson for the National Police Commissioner Vishnu Naidoo, confirmed that Maphumulo had opened a common assault case against Simelane at the Westville police station.

“We are still going to investigate the matter for now, which means Simelane won’t be appearing in court until we are finished with our investigation and hand over the document to the police,” said Naidoo.

Simelane’s family hit back, accusing Maphumulo of lying in his claim that he acted in self-defence, saying he was “making up a story” to defend himself.

“He is lying. Mandla has been abusing my child since they started dating. It’s his lawyers that have been advising him and helping him to make up a story,” said the family.

He will appear in court on May 5.
