Cheesy fun at expense of babies

- SACHA VAN NIEKERK

ANOTHER day, another wacky internet trend on social media and this time it’s the #CheeseChallenge. Parents over the world are filming themselves flinging cheese slices at their childrens’ faces purely for the entertainment.

According to website Eater, the prank was started by Michigan dad Charles Amara, who took to Facebook to share a video of a baby getting “cheesed”.

The caption read: “Attack of the cheese episode 2. He wasn’t happy after this one.”

A few days later, a Twitter user nabbed the video, claiming it as his own. “Just cheesed my li’l brother,” he captioned it.

Eight million views later he decided to delete the tweet and issue an explanation.

“Just to let you all know, that cheese tweet isn’t my li’l brother and ive deleted it didnt expect it to get THAT viral lmaoooo.”

He also apologised to the child’s parents for invading the family’s privacy. “I deleted it because it genuinely got way out of hand” and that he had never imagined that throwing cheese on babies would turn into a trend. Nevertheless, the challenge spread like wildfire, reaching all corners of the internet. It was no longer limited to babies anymore, either. Dogs, cats and even grown adults were getting slapped in the face with cheese for a laugh.

Babies remain the main victims of the prank due to their unpredictable reactions. Whether they’re startled and cry or laugh it off, taking a few nibbles of the cheese, most people will agree that the videos are in poor taste.

As a model, author, and Twitter personality, Chrissy Teigen put it: “I love a prank as much as anybody but I cannot get myself to throw cheese at my adorable baby, who has all the trust in the world in me.”
