Komphela optimistic the tide will turn despite back-to-back defeats for Golden Arrows

LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows got off to a flying start under Steve Komphela’s tenure but they have since lost that momentum.

Komphela, is not too concerned about the slump that he and his troops are going through.

The former Bafana Bafana skipper is adamant that they will eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Abafana Bes’thende suffered another defeat this past weekend on the road against Polokwane City. They were defeated 2-0. It meant backto-back defeats for Arrows, having slumped to a 1-0 loss last week against Orlando Pirates at home.

They have not won in their past four matches in the league. They have lost three games (Polokwane City, Pirates and SuperSport United) and drawn one (Chippa United).

“Everybody who hasn’t reached the 30-point mark is still in the mix. We are putting ourselves under pressure. We are clear, we have to make 30. If you are not above 30 you have to work,” Komphela told the media after the game against Polokwane City.

Abafana Bes’thende are 11th on the log with 25 points.

“The second half was much better. We controlled the game and created a lot of chances. I thought that if we had been a little calmer we would have had even a draw.

“Even against Orlando Pirates, we had a chance, the ball had dropped from Wayne Sandilands and we needed to get it into the net, but we didn’t. Again, today, it was the same. Again, you commit and you make a mistake and they punish you.

“We made half a mistake, the opponents punished us. I think we have to learn from this, “he said. Abafana Bes’thende didn’t travel back to Durban. They stayed in Limpopo as they prepare to face Baroka FC at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday in an Absa Premiership encounter at 7.30pm.

“Give me one opponent you will prefer to play now. I don’t want to mention the names of the teams. I would rather look at the numbers. Number 16 (Maritzburg United), a highly competent team, very aggressive. Number one (Orlando Pirates), highly competent. Okay, forget one and 16, go in to the middle, to eight, seven, six, five or nine, ten, 11 and 12.

“This is PSL and it is nice for the supporters and for the brand, but it’s not good for our hearts. But this is where we belong. This is for the brave. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” Komphela said.
