Rather name Cape airport after Sobukwe

-

THE LEADER of the EFF, Julius Malema, wants Cape Town International Airport to be renamed after Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

She was undoubtedly, a person who fought for freedom, but she had a tarnished image, having so many skeletons in the cupboard that even Nelson Mandela divorced her.

It is not a good idea to name the airport after her. Why should practically all South African airports be named after ANC comrades? The ANC comrades are not the only ones who fought for the liberation of the oppressed people and for the country. In the first place, why can’t airports be named after the cities they are in?

If it is a must, the Cape Town airport should be named after the late true spirited PAC leader, Robert Sobukwe, who was imprisoned on Robben Island by the apartheid regime.

It will be most fitting to name the airport after Sobukwe, as there is history of Sobukwe linked with Cape Town and Robben Island.

It was the parliament of the old regime that established the Sobukwe clause and that was history in the making. However, I am hoping the authorities responsible for changing names will take cognisance of this fact and not by-pass this stalwart and son of the soil who played a very important role for the South African oppressed people – he should not be forgotten. Give him the recognition he deserves. ISMAIL MOOLLA | Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal
