Buys vs Jacobs will be ‘bad’ for the Troublemaker

- JULIAN KIEWIETZ

JP BUYS believes that “Buys vs Jacobs” would be a very bad match-up for the latter.

When questioned after his successful EFC bantamweight title unification win over Luthando Biko on Saturday, this is what he had to say about possibly fighting Faeez “Troublemaker” Jacobs: “I think Faeez is an exciting fighter, but I do believe it’s a bad match-up stylistically for him.”

JP proved his current dominance in the Extreme Fighting Championship at Grand West following a ruthless display at EFC78 on Saturday. JP owned the hexagon despite taking on some head-snapping stand-up shots in the first round from a fighter who is renowned for his strong top game.

JP weathered the storm of the interim bantamweight title-holder before putting on a master class of speedy transitions and control that was unanswered for the most part of the fight landing hammer blows to the skulls of Luthando as the Coach Quan University athlete chipped away at his Port Ellizabeth-based opponent. JP then finally broke an oddly dejected and tired Luthando – one who is not often broken mentally – in the fourth round via TKO due to strikes.

Faeez (5-2) is one of the most active bantamweight fighters in the division and has been barking his name in title conversations for a while now, on Saturday he stood up during the press conference asking the fans to get behind his campaign to get that title shot.

“Stylistically, if I catch him with the shots Biko caught him with, his (JP’s) knees will buckle,” says the unpredictable, explosive and long-reaching Faeez whose last fight against TC Khusu ended in round one via TKO (punches).

“There is nobody close to me at the moment, I have been the most active in the division with the most finishes, too,” says Faeez. “I think Luthando lost that fight mentally and before long he lost it physically. He had a high work rate maybe a little over worked himself and got taken down rushing in three times within the first minute of the round,” says Faeez on the usually mentally and cardio-strong Luthando.

“But 2019 is my year, Cape Town would be the best place for this fight to happen, the seats will be sold out and that gives us both (Faeez and JP) enough time to prepare. Also there is no event like Cape Town when Troublemaker Faeez Jacobs is fighting.”
