Maties mascot steals the show

THE Maties may have been crowned Varsity Cup champions after a thrilling victory against rivals Tuks, but the club’s flamboyant mascot, Pokkel, stole the show once again.

The squirrel couldn’t be part of the celebrations after being escorted off the field during a match at the Daniel Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Monday night.

While being booted off for running on to the field, the crowds were angry, booing the two security guards.

Stellenbosch University spokesperson Martin Viljoen said they were aware of Pokkel getting into trouble.

“Security staff caught up with him and he was led out of the stadium,” said Viljoen. “However, he offered a heartfelt apology to the university and received a stern warning from security staff.”

Yesterday, Pokkel described his experience as “a real bummer”.

“I was under the impression that there was a celebration happening, and whenever this happens I run. I always run… I am a squirrel, after all.

“It was only when I was on the field that I realised that I was the only non-player on the field. It was a big mistake I really couldn’t foresee before

the time. Yet I enjoyed the game and I’m just happy that we won another Varsity Cup, even though I wasn’t there for the celebration,” he said.

Pokkel is known for diving in the opposite direction when a Maties player scores a try.

Vice-chancellor Wim de Villiers said: “It was a fantastic night at a packed stadium.

“It was great to see so many Matie supporters there, not only students but also alumni, of which a good number are current and former Springboks.

“Well done to the Maties team for pulling off an historic fifth Varsity Cup title win.

“The players were as consistent on the night as they have been all season, giving it their all and sticking to the game plan.

“But all credit to Tuks; they were worthy opponents and gave us a run for our money. I was impressed by the positive spirit in which the game was played by both sides.”
