Ex-municipal officer served summons for fraud
A FORMER Mossel Bay municipal officer and his accomplice have been served with summons to appear in the Mossel Bay Regional Court next month for alleged fraud and corruption.
The Hawks said the suspects, both aged 55, were arrested on June 25 and 26 respectively through court summons.
Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase said it was alleged that between May and December 2016, the former street and stormwater department manager colluded with a service provider and authorised an undue payment for work that was not done.
“The said company was awarded a tender to fix potholes as well as drainage systems. Subsequently a probe by the Hawks established firstly that they under-quoted to gain competitive advantage over other bidders,” said Nkwalase.
He said it was also found that the company was allegedly paid over R1.6million for bogus work.
The Mossel Bay Municipality has welcomed the arrests. Its spokesperson, Nickey le Roux, said that municipal manager Thys Giliomee had instructed an internal investigation. “During the internal investigation process, the official concerned resigned from his service with the municipality.
“Since then, strict measures have been put in place, including a fraud line where both staff and the public can report suspected fraudulent behaviour anonymously. Anyone who may become aware of or suspect fraudulent behaviour that may impact the Mossel Bay Municipality may call 0800 333 466 to report their suspicions,” Le Roux said.
