- STAFF WRITER

THE search for a child who fell into a canal, and a man who tried to rescue her had to be called yesterday due to the weather.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service members were yesterday alerted to the incident in which a child had fallen into the canal near 8th Avenue, Belgravia Estate.

Fire crews from Ottery and Epping fire stations and divers from Roeland Street fire station were dispatched to the scene.

“Members of the Ottery fire crew positioned themselves in Klipfontein Road across from the Mary Harding School, while Epping’s crew was at Kudu and Hickory streets, and at Loerie and Cornflower street, and divers at the sewerage plant.

“Police divers were at Buckner Road in Hazendal. A buoy, thrown into the canal to ascertain a possible exit point, emerged at Kudu and Hickory roads. The dive supervisor, however, called off the search at 4.34pm due to adverse weather conditions,” the City said.

More heavy rainfall is expected today, with the SA Weather Service also warning of flooding over the Metro, Cape Winelands, Overberg and the West Coast.

The City said yesterday that there were sporadic reports of localised flooding of roadways, but no closures.

“City departments and related external service providers remain on high alert to deal with weather-related impacts. Residents are reminded to please call the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre for any weather-related emergencies by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Oudtshoorn

Municipality said it had attended to a number of complaints relating to strong winds that caused damages in parts of the region.

Some formal and informal houses’ roofs were blown off in Matjiesrivier, De Kombuys (both north of Oudtshoorn) and in Volmoed (southwest of Oudtshoorn), while a tree fell over a bakkie in Oak Street.

“The power poles in Matjiesrivier, Schoemanshoek and De Kombuys broke, damaging power lines and causing unexpected power outages in these areas,” the municiaplity said.

Municipal officials are responding to the various complaints from parts of the Greater Oudtshoorn.

Any related complaints can be reported to 044 203 7800.
