Fans urged to register for Lions

SA Rugby have urged fans to make use of the remaining week to register for the much-anticipated British & Irish Lions Tests against the Springboks.

The online ballot, which is the same system that was used ahead of the World Cup in Japan last year, closes at 11:59pm next Wednesday. Successful applicants will be notified at the end of the month.

In a press release issued yesterday, SA Rugby said that interest in the three Tests – to be played at the FNB Stadium, Cape Town Stadium and Ellis Park – is extremely high after the first week of the ballot, while there is also strong interest in the games that will see three franchise teams (Stormers, Sharks and Bulls) and two invitational teams in action.

Tickets for the matches against the franchises range from R250 to R600, while tickets to see the invitational sides (SA Invitational team in Port Elizabeth and the SA A side at Mbombela Stadium) range from R100 to R350. The cheapest Test match ticket starts at R500 and increases to R1 250 and R2 000, while the top-priced ticket goes for R3 000.

“Test tickets are more expensive, but for as little as R100 to R250 supporters in Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town can see the best of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in action against their local heroes,” said Jurie Roux, chief executive of SA Rugby.

“We have ensured that there are more tickets available for our home fans than visitors from overseas as we want the Sea of Green to swamp the Red Tide. With over 70 000 South Africans registering for the tour, and in excess of 210 000 tickets already balloted for, chances are good that the ‘sold out’ signs will go up when the ballot closes next Wednesday.

“But this is a ballot and even though the interest may be higher than the demand for tickets at some matches, it doesn’t mean those encounters are sold out – anyone can still register, ballot and get tickets.”

The ticket ballot opened last Wednesday with supporters permitted to register for eight tickets for each of the eight matches.

Those who have not yet registered can still do so at www.lionstour2021.co.za.

Payment will automatically take place on the credit card used for submitting your ballot application if you are successful and seat allocation and ticket dispatch (courier or electronic) will take place in the second quarter of 2021.

Hospitality packages are available for all matches – ranging in price from R2 495 (excluding VAT) for a midweek game to R8 995 (excluding VAT) for a Test match. Those interested should email: hospitality@sarugbyevents.co.za
