Radical Solidarity Summit draws top artists, thinkers
GLOBAL artists, activists and thinkers will come together virtually today for the online Radical Solidarity Summit.
The summit is hosted by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and will run over five days, concluding on Friday.
The gathering hopes to address urgent issues, explore alternative futures, and discuss the possibilities that can be forged in the cultural field through acts of radical solidarity.
The programme will take the form of discursive talks alongside performances, film screenings and readings.
Koyo Kouoh, executive director and chief curator of Zeitz MOCAA, said the summit was a first for the museum and comes at a pivotal time for the Pan-African community.
“The summit will provide a platform for an incredible group of speakers whose demanding and critical voices will discuss bold strategies and map new realities within the cultural field.
“We are committed to interdependency and know that it is necessary as individuals and organisations to engage and establish tangible and operational alliances, engagements, functional families, expressions and platforms to address ongoing issues and to forge a way forward.”
The summit will include leading figures from across the globe and from a range of disciplines spanning political science, film, visual arts, literature and philosophy.
Artists and activists including Haroon Gunn-Salie, Achille Mbembe, Frieda Ekotto and Nontsikelelo Mutiti are among the participants.
Gunn-Salie said he was excited and honoured to be a part of the event with his Radical Solidarity performance.
“I found it a very interesting invitation and I was touched and honoured to be included in the summit. I will be speaking to radical solidarity through the work I have done over the past 10 years,” he said.
