THERE are nine active Covid-19 cases in the province’s 300 homes for the aged, according to the provincial Department of Social Development (DSD).

The DSD said a total of 1 666 older persons had recovered from the virus.

MEC Sharna Fernandez said the figures showed an increase of 161 recoveries since her previous update last weekend.

While the number was encouraging, the department would continue to monitor strict health and safety protocols, Fernandez said.

“I’m pleased that we are continuing to experience a steady increase in Covid-19 recoveries across our old-age homes. While I welcome the change in directions from the National Department of Social Development which highlights that visitations are allowed to take place, we must do so with extra precaution.

“I appeal to family members and loved ones of our older persons residing in old-age homes to be extra vigilant by following the necessary Covid-19 health and safety protocols when visiting these respective facilities,” Fernandez said.

Neighbourhood Old Age Homes director Anne Dobson said the organisation had recorded one Covid-19 case in their centres.

“It was a lady in Khayelitsha who made a full recovery. We currently have no cases in our homes. Our members are fully supported in terms of visits, access to help and support, as well as food parcels and electricity vouchers where needed,” said Dobson.

Kensington Home for the Aged general manager Leon Courie said they had been Covid-19 free since August 9.

“Visits are strictly controlled,” said Courie.
