AS THE WORLD continues to react against unrest in Jerusalem, where thousands were wounded and many arrested after Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, demonstrators in Cape Town yesterday came out in their numbers, demanding an end to violence and the eviction of Palestinians.

Under the umbrella of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, more than 1000 people picketed in front of Parliament's gates, calling for solidarity.

Al Jamah-ah spokesperson Shameemah Salie said they condemned the violation during the Muslim holy month of Ramadaan.

“The atrocities that have been committed is so linked to those of apartheid that took place in South Africa. We say no to the barbaric act that is happening in Palestine. It's the month of Ramadaan. For the Israeli Zionist regime to commit the brutal acts, to enter a sacred ground while people are fasting, it is unacceptable. We want the UN to stand up and say no to the genocide and oppression that has taken place,” she said.

Community activist Yusuf Daniel said everyone should stand together and show their support.

“We wanted to show solidarity to our brothers and sisters. It’s sad that we will be able to have Eid and they won’t.

“We wanted to show solidarity to our brothers and sisters. It's sad that we will be able to have Eid and they won't. Our hearts are with them. It's painful that at the moment we cannot do anything else other than show support. We want all countries to come together and put an end to this. Enough is enough, their products need to be boycotted and close the Israeli embassy,” he said.

In a media statement, the ANC expressed condemnation of the brutal act that took place in Jerusalem. “We condemn the callous brutality and repression meted out against innocent Palestinian protesters at Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock, where more than 200 peaceful protesters were injured. A situation where Palestinians are forced off their land and into exile or refugee camps must not be allowed.

“The ANC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to stand firmly on the side of the people of Palestine in their struggle to achieve freedom and self-determination.”

DA spokesperson on international relations Darren Bergman said the party was committed to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine in line with the UN's 1947 resolution.

A statement attributed to the Embassy of Israel to South Africa said: “Israel sought to achieve calm in Jerusalem. We took every measure to prevent conflict or violence and to allow freedom of worship. These measures include postponing the Supreme Court hearing regarding Sheikh Jarrah, blocking Jews from visiting the Temple Mount, changing the route of the Flag March, and then canceling the event. Moreover, Israel acted in a measured manner in response to the rockets and incendiary balloons that had been launched from the Gaza Strip, to prevent any escalation during this sensitive period.”
