Capetonians open hearts with donations to KZN

- STAFF WRITER

CAPETONIANS have heeded the call for relief food and other necessary supplies for KwaZulu-Natal.

Several trucks have made their way to that province, while more are expected to go in the next few days.

Emergency deliveries of food and medicines arrived in KZN last week, thanks to partnerships of organisations, businesses and residents.

The donations come as clean-ups are also under way after the looting and civil unrest.

The South African National Zakáh Fund, among others, has sent trucks to Isipingo and Umlazi to distribute bread and other essential items.

Gift of the Givers has mobilised to provide relief, while The Angel Network and HopeSA are sending a cargo truck and plane to KwaZulu-Natal with maize meal, beans, oil, sugar, baby formula and nappies.

The South African National Taxi Council and local airline Airlink, Shoprite and law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, are providing and transporting more than 2 000 food packages and provisions.

Karlind Govender, from Harfield Village, is collecting food and baby items to send this week.

Having already donated some supplies last week, Govender encouraged people to get involved.

He is collecting the goods at his house, which are due to be transported soon.

He is planning another truck dropoff around Wednesday.

“We are working with networks in KZN that have community outreach programmes.

“Over the next few days we will be collecting as much as we can to send another load to Durban,” Govender said.

He added that people could drop goods at his house, or make a monetary donation and he would buy the items.
