A TALENTED soccer player from Manenberg has been selected for trials in Slovenia and is raising funds to make the life-changing opportunity a reality.

Raven Adams was selected to join a squad of 18 from the Belmont Spurs Football Club on a ten-day trial camp in Slovenia that will see the group show off their skills with several scouts and coaches watching.

For the 21-year-old whose dream is to make soccer his professional career, this could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Adams has been playing street soccer since the age of six, his mother Helena Adams, 51, said.

“There is constant gang violence in this area. They are always at war. My child is either busy with the soccer clubs or he sits in the house, and I am grateful for that. Soccer has always been his passion.

“He would spend hours on the soccer field. This is a dream come true for him. We are not financially equipped because I am unemployed but we are trying to help and we are praying for him.”

Belmont Spurs chairman Brandon Timmy said the trip was to take place in July but Covid-19 travel restrictions would not allow it.

“We are more than just a soccer club, we are a registered non profit organisation focused on life skills and developing players off the field,” said Timmy.

“The agent saw our work on social media and reached out to us to give our boys an opportunity to come to Europe.”He added that their effort to find financial support had been a struggle.

The trip costs R36 000 per player. To support Adams and other members of the club contact his mother Helena on 067 267 8271. Timmy can be contacted on 078 187 3120 or via the Belmont Spur Football Club Facebook page.
