FUEL-EFFICIENT SUZUKI SWIFT
I drive a 2010 Suzuki Swift 1,5 GLS and, like so many others, on Freedom Day I made a road trip from Gauteng to Durban. On the trip, I averaged 15,2 km/l, or 6,6 L/100 km. Like everyone else, before my trip I checked all my fluid levels and tyre pressure, including the spare (there are no modifications to the car).
I normally fill my tank to three-quarter capacity with a good unleaded petrol, one that gives the vehicle power and lasts longer. This I know as I’ve tried other fuels. I never let the tank go below quarter level, as I don’t want the float in the fuel tank or pump to go faulty; nor do I fill the tank to maximum, as I don’t want to impair my EVAP (ventilation system).
My driving style: I don’t use my air-conditioner when climbing an incline; I switch it off and let the fans circulate the air during this short time.
I stick to speed limits to avoid unhappy encounters with officers and tickets in my mail. I also keep my foot on the pedal at a particular speed – 120 km/h on the speedometer – and I try not to fluctuate. When I see the signs to lower speed, I take my foot off the pedal, so it slows the car to the required speed.
I try to use the principles of momentum. When going downhill, let the car do the work, then at the right time I give more fuel. Navigate into a bend and accelerate out of one. I also use the correct gear for the correct speed.
On that Freedom Day trip, I noticed the car had much more power after the first two hours of driving, I think this was due to the oil being well heated and thin enough to flow easily in the engine. My fuel economy also significantly increased. The load you are carrying is a factor, but I only carried a large suitcase, and bags in the rear seat.
I have to give a shoutout to Suzuki. The VVTI engine makes it a joy to drive. Aside from the fuel consumption, there is enough power at any gear and it happily revs to a high engine speed. DAYALAN PILLAY Durban
