The Belfort Lion is the first hint and the RCZ is set to be a classic coupé for the future with a limited number of units on offer ensuring exclusivity. The double-bubble roof and rear windscreen are stand-out features, as are the aluminium-coloured roof spars.
Peugeot has a long history with diesel engines and – somewhat surprisingly for an eyecatching car – a diesel option is included. This 2,0-litre turbodiesel joins the familiar 1,6 turbopetrol engines used in many Peugeots and Minis. The auto THP has 115 kw; the manual version 147 kw. The diesel was later dropped because of low sales figures. Gearboxes are 6-speed manual or auto. We spotted just one diesel-engined RCZ for sale. Most mileages are below 100 000 km which is a plus for long-term ownership.
Although largely for visual appeal, ensure the rear spoiler is lifting correctly, according to speed. The first step of about 20 degrees should rise at 85 km/h while a further lift takes place at 155 km/h. Known for superior ride quality, the RCZ mixes sporty handling with an ability to take the bumps with no discomfort. The boot is slightly larger than the Mini’s with the advantage of added utility space of 528 litres.
The engines are well known by French car mechanics so there should be no surprises. The carbon build-up issues mentioned above for the Mini are relevant. Search for our technical article on the topic on Carmag.co.za entitled “Fouling the Fantasy”. Owing to the restricted space, no spare wheel is provided, only a mini compressor with sealant. Leather can become distorted from excessive heat so use a sun shield to keep sunlight off the dashboard. Knocking noise on bumps, acceleration or braking could be as a result of worn engine mountings. A fiveyear maintenance plan was included on purchase; ensure this history remains intact. If well cared for, the brunt of the depreciation should be behind you and the value may well increase in the future.
