Maserati Ghibli Hybrid

Behold, Maserati’s first four-cylinder model since 1939. We see what this dual-energy debutante can deliver

It is not often we get behind the wheel of a brand-new Maserati, but this “entry-level” model to the Ghibli range is an important car. It’s the first hybrid model adorned with the famous Trident badge

Nearly all manufacturers go through it; they have no choice but to develop and market cars they wouldn’t ordinarily release … think Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and even Ferrari’s upcoming Purosangue SUV. Despite reluctance on the part of their custodians, they have been clear winners in terms of sales, and more sales means more scope to build the cars they truly want to build.

Maserati’s Levante SUV generously contributes to the Italian firm’s bottom line and at least the company has been building sedans for a long time, not just sportscars. This latest model, the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid, takes the first step in a range that tops out with the 427 kw/730 N.m Ghibli Trofeo. The mild-hybrid system features a 48-volt alternator with an additional electric supercharger supported by a battery. The car cannot run on battery power alone and the system supports the internal

combustion engine while driving.

From the outside, the Ghibli looks as stylish and elegant as ever. This might only be the hybrid model but the aggressively styled front end, with its large grille and Trident emblem, certainly grabs your attention. Maserati has incorporated some neat exterior details harking back to its modern classic, the 3200 GT, visible in the boomerang-like profile of the rear lights. It might come with a four-cylinder engine, but the four exhaust pipes underneath the chiselled lower rear bumper remain. 18-inch multi-spoke wheels fill the wheel arches with purpose and are wrapped in low-profile rubber.

Look closer and specific details hint that this is the hybrid model and include three blue ducts on the front fenders and blue brake callipers. Climb inside the classy cabin and the same blue is mirrored on the stitching of the seats. This modern touch carries through to the large and userfriendly infotainment screen which debuts Maserati’s latest Connect programme.

The cabin feels high quality, from the soft leather to the tactile surfaces. There is a high-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system and one of the highlights is the clock positioned above the centre console. The subtle use of the Trident on the steering wheel and gearlever complete the ambience. Open the windows and you note the double-glazing; peek at the pedals and you realise these are solid metal items.

Heading out of the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, it was evident the Ghibli is very well insulated. As expected, the turbocharged 2,0-litre engine is quiet, but when you activate the Sport button, this shifts to a semideep, burbling sound from the exhaust. Maserati makes it very clear the sound is not amplified through the speakers, but rather from some trickery in the exhaust pipes. Kudos.

The gearshift paddles are mounted on the steering column and even though paddles fitted to a steering wheel are often easier to operate, these longer items are a joy to use.

Performance is never an issue with a combined 243 kw and 450 N.m. During modest throttle applications, you can swiftly and comfortably accelerate or overtake in traffic. Thanks to the torque, there is an immediate twisting force available that is

ideal for city driving. Electronics that adjust the suspension work independently to the Sport button, so, with the vehicle in a supple suspension setup, you can still enjoy a sporty drive.

We made our way towards the Cradle of Humankind to stretch the Masser’s legs. Through the corners, it hid its 1,9-tonne weight well and felt composed with plenty of performance. The hybrid drivetrain delivers this punch in a wonderfully linear manner. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and made quick progress through the countryside. Equipped with a relatively small capacity engine, 120 km/h in top gear settles the engine revs at 1 600 r/min, resulting in a relaxing drive on the highway.

This is the first step in the brand’s electrification plan. Next will be the release of fully electric models in the new Granturismo and Grancabrio. The MC20 supercar arriving later this year will usher in more exciting times for the Italian brand.
