‘I dream of a crime-free SA’

ADUNCAN Village police officer has been described as a “silent hunter” for his sterling work ethic and investigations which result in the conviction of criminals.

DetectiveSergeant Thanduxolo Mazwana, 38, a police officer for 12 years, has been applauded by both his peers and management after a case he was investigating recently saw the six accused each sentenced to life imprisonment. Luvuyo Ngemntu, Yonela Jobodwana, Nqaba Dzingwe, Vuyolwethu Wokona and his brother, Siviwe Wokona, and Masibulele Mkohlwa had decapitated a Duncan Village man in 2010 and this year were found guilty. They cut the man’s head off and

showed it to someone as proof of his death.

In a separate case Mazwana investigated, two men were last month convicted and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for fatally stabbing a 23-year-old man in 2012. The matter was recently heard in the East London Regional Court. A third accused was found not guilty.

Duncan Village station commander Colonel Piet Bellingan said Mazwana was a “silent hunter” who always kept his head down and removed criminals from the streets.

“This [Duncan Village] is not an easy area to police. Society is continuously demanding the extra mile and this member is applauded for doing just that. “His work is outstanding and is hugely beneficial to the community and the police in general. His presence and work ethic illustrate a loyal servant of the community,” Bellingan said.

He said while his members worked hard, it was important to congratulate Mazwana.

“His service is encouraging. Society needs to feel at ease and safe,” Bellingan added.

Mazwana said growing up in Ngqamakwe, he had always wanted to join the police.

“I dream of a crime-free South Africa and I have always wanted to be the best police officer I could be. The job has its challenges but I enjoy the fulfilment it brings at the end of the day,” Mazwana said.

National Prosecuting Authority regional communications manager Tsepo Ndwalaza said good investigators assist prosecutors in securing convictions.

“It is always great to work with investigating officers who are good at their work because they increase the chances to secure convictions. We always applaud great police work.” — siyab@dispatch.co.za
