United get real upbeat for Sundowns clash

- By VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

CHIPPA United captain James Okwuosa says the team are more determined than ever to collect all three points when they face highflying Mamelodi Sundowns in a Premier Soccer League fixture at Loftus Stadium tonight (7.30pm).

They are still chasing their first win of the year and their first under new coach Ernst Middendorp but Okwuosa believes the team are close to pulling it off.

“The team prepared well, just like we do with each and every game. There is no pressure and the team looks ready for the game against Sundowns.

“We have to try and get the three points which is the most important thing above any other. We are going there to win.

“Even though we are not getting good results, we keep fighting to get them,” Okwuosa said.

The Nigerian defender said last week the team lacks confidence this year and that factor had resulted in them not producing positive results.

“After Friday’s game and the way things are going now, I think we are moving towards the right direction in terms of putting our heads together, working together and just trying to make sure we get the points we need. We need to lift our team from the bottom and remain in the PSL.” he added.

In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and Chippa have met in three league matches since 2012/13. The Brazilians have one win to their name, while the other games ended in draws.

The Chilli Boys’ winless run was extended to 11 league matches last week Friday when they were held 1-1 by 10-man Amazulu at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

But despite being without a win since last year November, Middendorp is determined that he will deliver on his promise that the club will not be relegated.

Upon his arrival in Port Elizabeth, Middendorp set a 32-point target which he believes will keep Chippa United afloat in the Premier Soccer League.

Since being in charge the German coach has only delivered three points from a possible 18 in six match in the form of draws.

The Chilli Boys have dropped to 12th place on the log with 25 points from 23 games and are dangerously close to the relegation zone.
