SA film at Cannes

- By MOGOMOTSI SELEBI

A SOUTH African film featuring only two actors will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival next week.

The Beginning, a short story starring Tumisho Masha and Letoya Mangezi, will be screened at the festival’s Short Film Corner. Masha was ecstatic. “I have not done anything like since my days in theatre.

“But I was happy to have been a part of this project because, being one of only two characters, we sort of take over the film,” Masha said.

He said it was exciting because not only does he act but he had a hand in producing the movie with Shaun Naidoo and Bradley Katzen.

“What is even more exciting is that Shaun, Bradley and I put our own resources and funds into this project, which made it a little more special.”

Plans are already under way for the

it three to work together in future. Working with Mangezi again after a long time was equally pleasing for Masha. Mangezi plays a mother who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her child.

“I last worked with her when she was a young girl in the 1990s. We were in a drama called Soul Buddies and my character was much older.

“It is very exciting to see her having grown so much as an actor. When we first worked together, she was young. Now she is a woman, a mother and a great actress,” he said.

Naidoo said as a small production company, having a debut at Cannes was a huge accolade.

“We are looking forward to presenting the film at the festival and also expanding our network.

“We will be taking our next film project with us to introduce to interested people with the hope of securing support,” Naidoo said.
