All Blacks go all out for jugular at varsity games

- By MAWANDE MVUMVU

WSU All Blacks rugby club have taken their Eastern Cape dominance to the national stage with two out of two victories at the ongoing University Sport SA Games in Johannesburg and are hoping to close their campaign on a high when they meet the University of Namibia in their final match today.

WSU demolished the University of Limpopo 66-3 on Monday before beating Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) 24-19 yesterday afternoon at the annual event currently being held at the University of Johannesburg.

The rejuvenated students have been in good form this year, having finished third in the annual EC DSRAC Super 12 Cup competition earlier this year and are currently in contention for the championship of the Border rugby Super League 2015.

Against the University of Namibia today, WSU will be banking on the influence of inside centre Somila Mantyoyi, left wing Siya Jonas, flank Mihlali Qoma and outside centre Sive Mbebe.

The quartet have already made their presence felt in the previous two games and will surely want to finish their campaign on a high.

Mantyoyi and Mbebe’s combination has been a marvel to watch with the former having created a try and scored one in the last two while Qoma’s solid ball-carrying prowess will be called upon once again.

Jonas will be expected to continue doing what he does best, breaking lines and a man touted to be a good finisher like him should cross the tryline more often.

Given that WSU had lost against the CPUT in their previous contest three years ago, their victory against the Cape side on Wednesday was a huge psychological boost ahead of today’s final match.

WSU assistant coach Akhona Mgijima said coming back home with a 100% winning streak was top priority hence they will not settle for anything less than victory when they collide with their foreign counterparts today.

“Winning our scheduled three matches has been our plan before we even came here and that target is within reach having completed two thirds of our task already,” said Mgijima.

WSU have a mammoth Border Super League task awaiting them when they come back home as they are scheduled to meet local giants and fierce rivals, Old Selbornians and EL Police, in the coming few weeks. —
