Black Coffee perks up SA dance scene

- By POPPY LOUW

IF YOU need any motivation to buy Black Coffee’s new album, then you have clearly been living under a rock.

The South African DJ has been slaying the dance scene, if his new major international award is anything to go by. It was 10 years ago that Black Coffee’s career catapulted to success, and has not looked back since.

Black Coffee – real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo – was earlier crowned Breakthrough DJ of the Year, at the 2015 DJ Awards in Ibiza.

He was also handed the Dance Nation of the Year award on behalf of South Africa, which came ahead of the launch of his album Pieces of Me, at the Sappie Theatre Gardens, outside the Joburg Theatre, on Wednesday.

It seems to be an extraordinary year for Black Coffee, who last month confirmed he was booked for stints at Coachella in California next year.

And with his single We Dance Again featuring Aliceborn Nakhane Toure, which is burning up the charts and dance floors – and has attracted interest from American producer Swizz Beatz, who is jamming to the song – we can expect more from him. The DJ, thrilled no doubt by his accomplishments, took to social media.

Referring to his individual award, he said: “It’s in the bag!! Thank you for your best wishes and love.?#? DJ Awards ?#?South Africa StandUp”.

When South Africans got the Dance Nation award, Black Coffee shared: “OK there’s a second one!!!!! For South Africa. Dance Nation Of The Year. With our turbulent past, this is where we are today. ?#?WeDanceAgainChallenge proves how amazing we are.

“We deserve to give ourselves a pat on the back for this one. I believe the more we dance together, the better we will become.

“I’m so honoured right now and so proud to be South African!!!“

His wife Enhle, who was with him in Ibiza, tweeted: “HE WON!! I am proud and excited, so, so many other emotions bottled up and ready to burst all at the same time. Ibiza stood still for a night to celebrate the Worlds best DJs and @realblackcoffee has walked away with two #BestBreakthroughDj and one for all of SA to be proud of #dancenation. I’m at a loss for words so I’ll use the “kiss” method And keep it simple silly. CONGRATULATIONS @realblackcoffee “stars mapped out and dreams being caught!!” #inspired #simplylive #simplylove #simplyenhle???? — Additional reporting: RDM Newswire
