PE hopes to topple locals at Fish River

-

THE 11th annual Castle Lite Drive Cup is once again on the fairways as the highly competitive golfing competition gets under way at the Fish River Sun Golf Club today.

Now in its eleventh year, the event is one of the most popular on the local golfing calendar and pits teams from East London and Port Elizabeth against each other.

The event will see 68 players from Port Elizabeth battling it out against 68 opponents from East London in a friendly competition to settle traditional provincial rivalry.

East London has complete bragging rights in the competition holding a dominant 10-to-nothing lead over their PE neighbours.

Last year’s captains, Dario Knock from Algoa FM East London and PE’s Mitch van de Putte are back at the helm once again to lead the teams.

The action gets under way today and continues until Sunday and there will be three different formats of matchplay, including betterball.

The Gary Player-designed course will reportedly be in top condition for the competition.

“It is a golfing weekend for the whole family,” said Fish River Sun’s Stefan Ferreira.

“With our heated pool, health spa, walks and other activities there is plenty to keep everyone busy while the golfer is out on the course.”

“Of course, just lying by the poolside and relaxing is also an option.”

Situated halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London, the Fish River Sun is the natural setting for the “east vs west” battle to take place, said Ferreira.
