Metro issues tender for new traffic department in KWT

BUFFALO City Metro (BCM) has issued a tender for the construction of a traffic department building in King William’s Town.

According to BCM, operations from the building will ensure all traffic services are rendered under one roof and will improve staff working conditions.

The Daily Dispatch underst traffic services in King William’s Town are currently being provided from two different sites.

One, located near the Stone Towers Shopping Centre, serves as a learners’ testing centre, while the other in Taylor Street offers services such as the payment of fines and licence renewals.

Residents and motorists say the two buildings have led to confusion, with most people not knowing which one to go to.

BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese said the planned development is estimated to be a multi-year project.

“It is anticipated that the construction will start in the next financial year and the estimated completion is approximately three years with a set budget per year.

“All services will be within one environment, as well as improve the working conditions for the staff,” Matebese said.

He was unable to give the estimated budget allocated for the development because it would interfere with tender processes.

The building will be constructed on the corner of Edward and James streets from where the old fire department use to operate.

KWT BCM councillor Siyabonga Skolo said residents had always hoped the metro would bring traffic services under one roof.

“The current situation is inconvenient where people have to travel between two locations for services. The new building will ensure traffic services are rendered in an efficient manner.”

Taxi operators also welcomed the initiative. “We would sometimes be sent from one location to the other after being told the specific service was not available at that location,” taxi driver Thamsanqa Qwabe said.

The closing date for bidders to submit their documents for the development is April 22. —
