Phete gets a run for Portuguese side at last

- By NICK SAID

SOUTH African midfielder Thibang Phete played his first minutes for Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes since January as the side lost 3-0 at Maritimo to continue their poor run of form.

The 22-year-old has been relegated to the club’s reserve side in recent weeks, but can expect more game-time in the closing weeks of the season.

He will be joined at the side by Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu next season, but disappointingly there will be no UEFA Europa League action for the pair after a run of just five points from the last 30 available to them has seen the club tumble down the table.

Olympic Games hopeful Lebogang Phiri started for Danish side Brondby as they lost 2-0 to top side FC Copenhagen.

South Africa have drawn Denmark in their first round pool at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Phiri will have some unique insight to share on many players he would have faced in the country’s domestic competitions.

Forward Bradley Ralani netted his second goal of the season to help Lyngby to a 2-0 victory over Næstved and closer to automatic promotion to the Danish top-flight next season.

They lead at the top of the table by six points from Horsens, but have played a game more.

Granwald Scott played for Slovan Bratislava as they closed the gap on Slovakian league leaders Trencin to six points with a 3-1 victory at Senica, while Dani Ladeira played for relegationthreatened Macedonian side Mladost Carev Dvor as they lost 1- 0 at home to Skhupi.

Roodeport-born Joel Untersee was involved in a thrilling clash in the Swiss league as his Vaduz side lost 5-4 to Young Boys.

That defeat has pushed them to the bottom of the table. There was no sign of Kermit Erasmus for French Ligue 1 side Rennes. He has featured just once for the side since arriving from Orlando Pirates in January.

Finally, Thulani Serero did not make it off the bench as Ajax Amsterdam needed two late goals to draw at home with Utrecht.

They remain at the top of the Dutch league standings, but are now ahead of PSV Eindhoven on goal-difference only.
