Williams unhappy despite clean sheets

HIS clean sheets have reached double figures but SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is far from satisfied.

Only Bidvest Wits’ Moeneeb Josephs has kept more clean sheets (13 clean sheets) in the league than Williams and the United goalminder is second with 10.

The 24-year-old Williams has credited the club’s new goalkeeper coach, Lee Baxter – the son of Matsatsantsa’s head coach, Stuart – for his improved performances in goal.

“We are not conceding as many goals as we used to before and that’s a positive for us. We are getting the goals as well,” Williams told the Daily Dispatch yesterday.

“Honestly speaking, I’m not happy because I have 10 clean sheets but I have conceded 31 [league] goals. The damage has been done,” Williams admitted.

‘‘Gavin Hunt used to tell me, ‘If you concede less than 20 goals, you win the league’ and it is true. Every season I go in with that mentality that I should concede less than 20, but I’ve already conceded 31 and that’s 11 more already,” explained Williams, who conceded 38 goals in 28 league games last season.

The Port Elizabeth-born keeper is confident that his new goalkeeper coach can help him become one of the best goalkeepers in the league again.

He was named the Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season in the 2011-12 campaign, which was his second in the top-flight.

“There is always room for improvement with every player and I’m taking it one step at a time. I’m still young in goalkeeping terms and learning a lot from the new goalkeeper coach. He’s improving my game a lot, as well as the defence. He talks a lot to the defenders as well.

“I’m very happy and if you check, our defenders are getting the man-of the-match award on a regular basis. From a defence point of view, we are all improving,” Williams added.

SuperSport United’s resurgence has seen them break into the top eight and they now occupy seventh spot.
