Kings to add spice to heat up the Currie Cup

- By GEORGE BYRON

FIERY fullback Johann Tromp says people must not make the mistake of thinking that the EP Kings will be a punching bag for rival teams in the Currie Cup Premier Division.

Tromp, a Namibian international with 27 Test caps to his name, issued the warning to rivals ahead of his team’s match against Western Province in Port Elizabeth tomorrow (kickoff 4pm).

The hard-running Tromp, who has scored tries in each of his team’s opening two matches against Boland and the Blue Bulls, said he was on his way for a trial at the Leopards three weeks ago before his agent told him he would be joining the Kings for three months.

“Playing Super Rugby for the Southern Kings is one of my big ambitions.

“My aim to is play to get into the Kings side for a Super Rugby contract or a long-term contract to settle myself in my rugby career.”

Tromp played his first game at centre for the Kings, but was switched to fullback for the Bulls game where he will also start against WP.

Meanwhile, concerned Western Province coach John Dobson wants his team to up their workrate in Port Elizabeth.

After their defeat against the Free State Cheetahs at Newlands last week, Dobson’s men have focused on improving their intensity and their attacking shape, as they did not play with enough width against the Bloemfontein side.

Olympic Sevens bronze medallists Cheslin Kolbe and Werner Kok will both start for Western Province.

Kolbe will make his first start of the Currie Cup Premier Division after coming off the replacements bench last week, while Kok will make his Western Province debut on the right wing.
