Chippa will be out to impress

- By VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

CHIPPA United will be hoping to make an impressive debut in the MTN 8 competition today when they play Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

The Port Elizabeth side finished a commendable sixth last season to book themselves a place in the lucrative MTN8 competition for the first time.

They now they stand a chance to walk away with a massive R8 million prize.

After their superb start in the league in beating Free State Stars 2-1 with goals from Rhulani Manzini at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday, they will be confident they have what it takes to progress to the semifinals today.

After the match coach Dan “Dance” Malesela said he has a game plan for their encounter against Stars but refused divulge what it exactly entails.

He will banking on his players to not disappoint him today and get the job done as planned.

Unlike Platinum Stars who won the MTN8 trophy in 2013, the Chilli Boys have no experience in the competition and will be regarded as underdogs.

In 2013 the Rustenburg side beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 in penalties in the final after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Today’s match will not be an easy one as both teams have so much at stake.

Chippa will be out to break their cup competition deadlock and move to the next stage. They have never passed the knockout stages in cup games since their arrival in the PSL.

Meanwhile, Stars will be out to regain the trophy after they failed to grab silverware for two seasons.

The club lost 5-2 on aggregate to Kaizer Chiefs in 2014 and the following season Dikwena finished in 11th place on the log.
