Wits and Pirates in potentially explosive game

- By MNINAWA NTLOKO

BIDVEST Wits have the look of a team that means business this season and they appear to be carrying enough guns to challenge on all fronts.

Their systematic dismantling of Kaizer Chiefs in their opening Premier League match on Tuesday night was made all the more impressive by the fact that new marquee signings Cuthbert Malajila and Mogakolodi Ngele started from the bench.

Gabadinho Mhango‚ Xola Mlambo‚ Thabang Monare and Eleazar Rodgers all impressed on the night and will have made even reluctant neutrals sit up and take notice.

While the Wits squad looks imp coach Gavin Hunt is not satisfied and is planning to make two more signings before the PSL transfer window closes at the end of the month.

“From my perspective‚ I think you can never be done (in the transfer market)‚” Hunt said.

“I think if you are done then you have got a problem. I think you must always try to improve your squad. The question is‚ is there something better out there than what you actually have in your squad that can help your team?

“If not‚ well‚ then you are done. But I think in life and in football you can never be done. You should always be trying to improve your team and we are looking at one or two options in a certain position. We will continue until 5pm on August 31. But if we can’t do it then we can’t do it.”

Hunt’s declaration will have gone out as a sobering warning to his rivals and this new Wits side will once again be on display when the Clever Boys host Orlando Pirates in a potentially explosive MTN8 quarterfinal match at Bidvest Stadium tonight.

Pirates coach Muhsin Ertugral said he was content with his squad and had enough depth in his ranks to withstand whatever his rivals throw at him.

Indeed‚ the Bucs have also been busy in the transfer market and Ertugral’s assertion is certainly understandable.

“We have two or three players involved (in every position) and we have the quality‚” Ertugral said.
