Komga show to harvest big crowd

IT IS that time of the year again when fun lovers converge at Komga for the annual Nedbank Komga Agricultural Show.

The show will be held at the Komga Show Grounds from Thursday to Saturday next week.

Those planning to attend can expect a fun-filled weekend with lots of eats and fun activities.

The show will be steered by members of the Komga Farmers Association and the Kei Road, Macleantown and Mooiplaas Farmers’ Associations, who each appointed a member to serve on the show’s committee.

One of the organisers, Charli Fourie, said that after many years of having no sheep on show at Komga, a slaughter lamb competition was introduced in 2014 and has been a sensation since.

“It drew all of 23 entries. This grew to over 200 sheep last year, which came from far and wide and with stalwart Robbie Blaine in charge of the sheep section as from this year, these numbers are set to grow some more this year,” said Fourie.

Started in 1951 and held annually, the Komga Agricultural Show is a highlight of the year, with people from other areas around the province attending.

The show’s aim is to promote the importance of farming, while also bringing communities and farmers together with a fun-filled entertainment lineup.

Fourie said that on the first day of the show, Agri EastCape president Doug Stern, would be the guest speaker at a joint Farmers Associations Breakfast meeting, where entries for the huntingtrophy competition and slaughter lamb best-pen competition would be taken.

“With many concerns uppermost on the minds of farmers, this will be an excellent opportunity to get the answers from the horse’s mouth,” she said.

The Saturday youth show tug-of-war competition which was very popular last year would also be a highlight, said Fourie.

“The derby between Komga and Stutterheim will take place again this year, complemented by sing-songs and other items,” she said.

Fourie said the show kitchen was famous for its eats and Komga Round Table would run the steakhouse and pub for the duration of the show.

There will also be a huge variety of stalls selling pickled fish, pancakes, gourmet coffees, and more. Entrance is R25 for adults and R15 for children. –
